What is Yoga?
question 3
question 2
question 1
The word yoga means ‘to yoke’, sometimes translated as ‘to unite’, and is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj. An ancient and complex practice from India, yoga is a collection of mental, physical and spiritual practices that promote self reflection and inward exploration. The intention of yoga is to harness and still the mind, thus liberating ourselves from the bondage of suffering (dukha).
Defined as the path of self knowledge, Yoga is a five thousand year old science which offers tools for nervous system regulation and healthful living. The Yoga Sutras outline ethics for conducting ourselves on and off the mat, such as living in the spirit of compassion (ahimsa) and truth (satya), living a life of cleanliness (sauca), as well as practicing non-stealing (asteya), non-hoarding (aparigraha) and surrender (isvara-pranidhana).
A combination of physical postures (asana), breathwork (pranayama), meditation (dhyana) are what we typically experience in a modern yoga studio or class setting.

question 8
What are the benefits of Yoga?
Classes are designed to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, thus reducing stress hormones in the body, slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. During class we intentionally practice sensory withdrawal (pratyahara), which means minimizing sensory input and focusing our attention inwardly. This can strengthen our connection to intuition and promote feelings of empowerment.
Science has proven yoga can;
-Support immune function
-Help manage stress
-Increase energy
-Benefit heart health
-Help ailments
-Improve strength, flexibility and balance

What if I am not flexible or have an injury?
Regardless of your flexibility or experience, our classes are an inclusive space for all levels and abilities. Modifications for injuries and other physical conditions are offered by instructors. If you have an injury or concern, please reach out to your teacher prior to class so we can ensure you are practicing safely.
Remember yoga is not only about physical postures (asana) - asana is only one of eight limbs in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. The path of yoga is not about accomplishing the most advanced postures, or pushing our bodies to extremes. Rather, we are learning to approach ourselves with greater compassion, instead of through the lens of comparison. Yoga is about pursuing truth and self-knowledge, with the ultimate goal of union as our motive. Therefore, regardless of your flexibility or experience, there is always a space for you in class!

Please bring active wear - clothes you feel comfortable moving and sweating in. Bring a water bottle, hydration is incredibly important when practicing hot yoga or pilates (we have a refillable water station). Please bring a yoga mat, we have mats for rent at the studio for 3$, but we suggest bringing your own! You may want a small towel to use for sweat in our hot classes. If you plan on showering in our facility, please bring a towel as well as shampoo + conditioner if you need it. We supply body wash. When to arrive for your class booking?
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your scheduled class and no earlier than 20 minutes before.
We have a *no late policy*, so please ensure you are on time for class. There is no late entry to classes. Arriving late is disruptive to the instructor and students, and we really value creating an excellent class experience for all involved.

What if I need to cancel a class I've registered for?
At Glow Hot Yoga we have a cancellation policy. If you need to cancel a class booking, please do so a minimum of three hours before your scheduled class, to allow time for other students to take your spot.
For members, if you fail to cancel three hours before and do not show, you will be charged a 12$ cancellation fee. Unfortunately, this policy is necessary to ensure that spaces in class aren't being wasted.
For non members, if you fail to cancel three hours before and do not show, you will lose your class credit and it cannot be refunded. Again, this policy is simply to ensure everyone who wants a spot in class can access it. Our studio has a maximum capacity of 17, so every spot is valuable to both us and our students!

Can I have conversations in the hot room?
We ask that you please honour silence in the hot room. For many folks, their yoga practice is an hour of reprieve from the overwhelm of everyday life. Some students may be healing from trauma or using their practice as time to tend to their mental wellness. For differing reasons, many need and desire quiet time to prepare for their practice.
The only time silence is not expected in the hot room is for our Inferno Hot Pilates classes.
We also appreciate that for many, time in the studio is social time! If you wish to socialize please do so in the common area. Conversation and connection in our common area is welcome and encouraged!
